How do I start a cosmetic business on line? Serious answers will get you points!!!!?

What is the most important things I need to know and do? Do I need a business license? Do I need insurance? How do I start a cosmetic business on line? Serious answers will get you points!!!!?
Since it appears that you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. Whether you start a web based only business or one with a store front you'll have the same start up issues. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting an online cosmetics business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.

You'll need to register the business with your state controller's office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.

What you need to know and do really depends on whether you're going to sell your own products or sell someone else's products.

To sell your own products you should research laws and regulations regarding ingredients, packaging and labeling. Check the FDA site to start.

The avenues available for selling someone else's products include buying products wholesale, selling for a direct sales / party plan type company (like Avon), or selling through affiliate programs.

Contact your local government to find out about licensing. Check your state's official website and call your town clerk or county clerk.

You can find direct sales / party plan company information at

For affiliate programs try

(And there are many other programs like CJ. Search for affiliate networks or affiliate programs)

You can also check your favorite cosmetic companies for affiliate and wholesale programs.

Another option would be to start a blog on beauty and cosmetics and monetize it with advertising and affiliate sales.
I do believe you'll need a license, probably some insurance, and if you want people to buy products directly off of your site, get Virtual Terminal where they can pay with their credit card right then and there. If it's too much for you to start up with, you might want to find investors, and if your really sure - I mean ABSOLUTELY sure, then go to a bank and get a loan. Be careful with interest though. You're also going to have to get products to sell from companies. And most importantly, you'll need your company registerd, trademarked, or copyrighted, whichever so know one can falsely use your business.
